Bill Monroe Mandolin Part 1 - Specialty Workshop!
with Josh Martin
Saturday, March 22, 2-3:30pm. $30
Multi-instrumentalist Josh Martin leads the workshop attendees through a deep dive into Bill Monroe’s style and analyze what made Monroe’s mandolin playing so revolutionary in country and bluegrass music through right-hand picking techniques, double stops, cross-picking, tremolo, arpeggio shapes, chucking, hammer-ons and pull-offs. You’ll learn Monroe’s 3-part instrumental masterpiece “Big Mon,” which utilizes many of these techniques.
Bring a mandolin, the pick of your choice (recommended: ‘extra heavy’, 1.0mm or greater or Dawg-style mandolin picks for Monroe’s style), a notebook and all your questions about classic bluegrass mandolin picking.
Recommended pre-requisites: knowing your open chords and a few closed chord shapes, and be familiar with reading tablature or melody.
