Fiddle

The fiddle (or violin) is so versatile. This one instrument can play everything from orchestral pieces to barn-raisers to Balkan folk tunes.

Our fiddle teachers offer group classes for adults working through a range of subgenres in traditional music.

Specialty Workshop!

Scandinavian Fiddle Tunes

with Grammy nominees Andrea Hoag and Loretta Kelley

Saturday, November 30, 2:00-3:30pm. $30.

Register now.

Meet the rich and surprising tradition of Swedish and Norwegian music! Sometimes ethereal, sometimes infectiously danceable, this tradition goes back hundreds of years. We’ll look at older forms of music such as the 3/4-time polska and långdans, as well as 19th-century forms like schottische, polka, and waltz. The workshop is focused on fiddlers, though other melody instruments are welcome, and you’ll get a chance to hear the multi-stringed Hardanger fiddle. You’ll come away with some delectable tunes and new ideas for how to make dancers and listeners happy.

Andrea Hoag and Loretta Kelley were nominated for a Grammy award for their CD Hambo in the Snow. Loretta is America's best-known player of Norway's beautiful and exotic-sounding Hardanger fiddle, and is also respected for her mastery of “flat” (regular) fiddle. She studied with many of Norway's greatest fiddlers, and is well known in Norway and the U.S.  Andrea is a graduate of Malungs Folkhögskola’s Folk Fiddle Pedagogy program in Sweden. She has also studied with many of Sweden's great fiddlers, and she has performed extensively in the U.S. and Sweden.
